Kitchen Hobs FAQ

Which hob should I choose: induction, ceramic or gas?
Choose induction for fast heating and responsive temperature control, provided your pans are induction-compatible. A conventional electric ceramic hob is a practical choice if you want a smooth surface and wider cookware compatibility. Gas offers visible flame control but needs a suitable gas supply and ventilation. Consider your cookware, kitchen connections, cooking habits and total installation budget before choosing.
What is the difference between an induction hob and a ceramic hob?
Both are electric hobs and can have a similar glass-ceramic surface, but they use different heating technology.

Induction hob: a magnetic field heats the base of a compatible pan directly. It heats quickly and responds quickly when you increase or reduce the power, giving you better control when boiling, simmering or frying. You need induction-compatible cookware with a magnetic base.

Conventional ceramic hob: electric elements heat the glass surface, which then heats the pan. It takes longer to heat up and cool down, and the cooking zone retains heat after you reduce the power or switch it off. It works with most flat-bottomed cookware suitable for electric hobs, without requiring a magnetic base.

Which should I choose? Choose induction for faster heating and more responsive control. A conventional ceramic hob is a practical option if you want to keep suitable non-magnetic cookware.

Both surfaces can remain hot after cooking. On an induction hob, the hot pan transfers heat back to the glass, so the surface is not necessarily safe to touch. Always observe the residual-heat indicator.
Do I need special pans for an induction hob?
You need cookware with an induction-compatible magnetic base. Look for the induction symbol on the pan or its packaging. A magnet sticking firmly to the base is a useful initial check, but also check the manufacturer's compatibility guidance and the hob's minimum pan diameter. Aluminium, copper and glass cookware only work if they have a suitable induction base.
Does an induction hob use less electricity than a ceramic hob?
Induction generally uses less electricity for the same cooking task because it heats the pan directly and loses less heat to the surrounding surface. Actual consumption depends on the model, power setting, pan size and cooking time. Use a flat, correctly sized pan and a lid where suitable. The hob's maximum rated power is not its constant electricity consumption.
Will a new hob fit the opening in my kitchen worktop?
Check the installation drawing for the exact model before ordering. The advertised hob width is not the same as the worktop cut-out size, and two 60cm hobs may need different openings. Measure the cut-out width and depth, worktop thickness, cabinet space and required clearances. Also check ventilation and compatibility with an oven or drawers below.
Is a two-zone Domino hob enough for a small kitchen?
A two-zone Domino hob can suit a kitchenette, a small household or someone who usually cooks with one or two pans. A four-zone hob gives more flexibility for preparing several dishes together. Consider the size of your usual pans as well as the number of zones. Domino describes the compact format; check whether the individual model is gas, ceramic or induction.
What is an induction hob with an integrated extractor?
It combines induction cooking zones and an extractor in one appliance, drawing cooking fumes down through an inlet in the hob. Also called a venting hob or downdraft extractor hob, it can replace a separate overhead cooker hood when correctly specified and installed. Check the extraction layout, cabinet space, noise levels and required accessories before choosing one for your kitchen or island.
Does a hob with an integrated extractor need an outside vent?
That depends on the model and installation kit. Ducted extraction carries air outdoors. Recirculation passes air through grease and odour filters before returning it to the room; it does not remove cooking moisture from the home. Check which arrangement the model supports, whether filters or ducting are included, and the required airflow route through the cabinet. Room ventilation is still important.
Can I replace my ceramic hob with an induction hob?
Often yes, but the replacement needs more than matching the surface dimensions. An electrician should check the electrical supply, circuit protection, connection requirements and the new hob's power rating. The worktop opening and ventilation clearances must also suit the new model, and your cookware must be induction-compatible.
Do built-in hobs need professional installation?
Built-in hobs should be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions by a suitably qualified professional. Electrical models need a suitable connection, while gas models need the correct gas type, pressure and fittings. Do not assume a hob can use an ordinary socket or that a gas hob is ready for your gas supply. Contact us before ordering to confirm service availability and any additional work. See our Installation Services.
How do I clean a glass hob without scratching it?
For routine cleaning, switch the hob off and let it cool, then use a soft cloth and a cleaner recommended for the surface. Avoid abrasive pads and dragging pans across the glass. Follow the manual for burnt-on food and sugary spills, which may need prompt treatment with a suitable hob scraper. For integrated extractors, clean the grease filters and maintain the odour filters as instructed.
Do I need a separate cooker hood if my hob has an integrated extractor?
No, a hob with an integrated extractor is designed to combine cooking and extraction in one appliance, so a separate overhead cooker hood is normally unnecessary. The built-in extractor draws cooking fumes and grease towards an inlet in the hob.

Depending on the model and installation kit, air is either ducted outside or filtered and recirculated into the room. Correct installation, suitable airflow and regular filter maintenance are essential. General kitchen ventilation is still needed, especially with recirculation, which does not remove cooking moisture from the room.
